Deadly Household and Wild Plants
There is little question that plants are beautiful and serve to effectively enhance the aesthetics of a given surrounding. Many people, however, are not aware that a number of these same plants are also toxic to companion animals. If an individual is both a plant and animal lover, it may be difficult to choose one over the other, but it's better than having to watch an animal suffer from poisoning. Here are some common household plants to watch out for:
- Caladium (a.k.a. Angel Wings)
- Spider plant
- Dieffenbachia
- Dragon tree
- English holly
- Daffodil
- Snowhead
- Foxglove
- Poinsettia
- Airplant
- Hyacinth
To follow regular household plants, here is a list of toxic naturally occurring plants to watch out for:
- Foxglove
- Oak
- Red mapple
- Thorn apple
- Water hemlock
- Skunk cabbage
- Milkweeds
- Bluebonnet
Symptoms of poisoning include excessive salivation, intense pain, diarrhea, vomiting, gastro-intestinal disorders and even death. These lists are not intended to create a panic situation nor encourage discarding of plants; they are simply stated to increase awareness of possible toxicities.
